Squadron Sail to Prangli, Hara and Viinistu

The club’s highlight event of the summer was the squadron sailing trip at the end of July to Prangli, Hara, and Viinistu. This time, there were a total of 15 boats and 40 participants.

The planned introductory stop at Prangli on Thursday evening turned into a lively gathering at Karupesa, accompanied by maritime stories and delicious solyanka. A light rain did not bother the sailors, and discussions focused more on the strong tailwind forecasted for the next day, leading to thoughts of continuing toward Hara that same evening. The first gusts of wind at 10 m/s arrived just as the slowest boat, the club’s yacht Anna-Maria, reached the tip of Juminda under full sails in the twilight.

The official opening of the squadron sailing event took place on Friday at the Hara harbor flag square, together with harbor master Tarvi Velström. Before the commodore’s opening speech, former commodore Armin Karu presented the club’s silver badge to the new commodore, Valdo Kalm. As a symbol of friendship between the Hara and Tallinn clubs, the host harbor master Velström and our commodore Valdo Kalm exchanged club pennants, and together they hoisted the Tallinn Yacht Club flag onto the harbor mast yard. It is a tradition in our club to learn about the culture and history of the harbors we visit. Tarvi Velström gave club members a fascinating overview of the history of the local coastal people, the origins of Tallinn sprat production, and the technical infrastructure that served Soviet naval ships during that era. In the evening, we were hosted by the harbor restaurant with its finest menu, and the most enthusiastic dancers had the chance to enjoy DJ Tom Lilienthal’s music selection.

On Saturday morning, we sailed on calm waters toward Viinistu. Commodore Valdo Kalm presented the Viinistu harbor owner, Jaan Manitski, with the club’s pennant, the 100 Years book, and a commemorative medal. Before dinner, Jaan Manitski took us on a journey through Viinistu’s history and gave us a detailed introduction to the extensive collection of the art museum. From Viinistu, club members continued their journey to Kaberneeme, Finnish harbors, and other destinations.

Karl-Martin Rammo starts racing at Olympic Regatta

Dear Club Members,

I invite you to support Karl-Martin Rammo as he competes in the Marseille Olympic Regatta! The first start for the Men’s Dinghy ILCA 7 class is scheduled for 13:15, and the races will continue until August 6.

The Olympic regatta is one of the most prestigious sailing competitions, where only the world’s best sailors qualify. Each country can be represented by just one boat in each class, making both the national qualification process and the selection of the competing sailor extremely competitive. Karl-Martin Rammo has previously represented Estonia in three Olympic regattas: he finished 18th in Weymouth 2012, 21st in Rio de Janeiro 2016, and 15th in Enoshima 2021, securing two race wins—his best performance to date. As he embarked on his fourth Olympic regatta, Rammo shared a heartwarming family photo on social media, recalling how 12 years ago, on his way to his first Olympics, he had butterflies in his stomach. Despite his experience, the excitement and anticipation remain just as strong.

Team Manager Lauri Väinsalu gives an update from Marseille:
“Life and conditions for the sailors here in Marseille are quite good. By now, the daily schedule and routines have settled, and preparations have gone according to plan. Ingrid, Karla, and Matt are staying in the Olympic Village right next to the harbor, so everything they need is within easy reach. Rein, physiotherapist Liisbet, and I are staying in an apartment 3 km from the harbor, commuting daily by bike.
Karla and Ingrid are competing with lottery-assigned equipment provided by the Olympic organizers. Both received their gear on July 20. In the windsurfing class, there have been some technical issues, which the manufacturer has been addressing along the way—meaning Ingrid has had to spend a bit more time on equipment adjustments than planned.
The weather here is significantly warmer than in Paris, where the opening ceremony took place in heavy rain but was still an impressive spectacle. In Marseille, we have a stable 30°C every day. Overall, Team Estonia’s sailors are in good spirits in the Olympic Village.”

Tallinn Race summary

As part of The Tall Ship Races Tallinn program, the spectacular Tallinn Race regatta took place, a tradition since 2010, organized by the Tallinn Yacht Club.

This year, the racecourse was brought right up to the waterfront, allowing for an up-close viewing experience. Club members and young or former sailors provided live commentary, and we engaged the audience even further through social media with live interviews from the finish line.

The regatta primarily featured young sailors from the TJK Sailing School competing in double-handed classes RS Feva, 29er, and 49er. In addition, beginner sailors raced in the Optimist class, and para sailors competed in the Hansa 303 class—bringing the total number of participants to 61 athletes.

The most exciting aspect of the regatta was undoubtedly its innovative format, which kept the competition intense all the way to the final showdown. Each day functioned as a separate mini-regatta, with the combined results counting as a single race towards the overall standings. The winner of the final Super Final was crowned the overall regatta champion, while placements from second place onward were determined by the cumulative results of all race days. This format provided both competitors and spectators with extra motivation to give their absolute best at all times.

The weather initially greeted us with rain and wind, but with each passing day, warm summer conditions got closer. On the final day, we first enjoyed sunshine and calm waters before getting down to racing.
