Squadron Sail to Prangli, Hara and Viinistu

Squadron Sail to Prangli, Hara and Viinistu

The club’s highlight event of the summer was the squadron sailing trip at the end of July to Prangli, Hara, and Viinistu. This time, there were a total of 15 boats and 40 participants.

The planned introductory stop at Prangli on Thursday evening turned into a lively gathering at Karupesa, accompanied by maritime stories and delicious solyanka. A light rain did not bother the sailors, and discussions focused more on the strong tailwind forecasted for the next day, leading to thoughts of continuing toward Hara that same evening. The first gusts of wind at 10 m/s arrived just as the slowest boat, the club’s yacht Anna-Maria, reached the tip of Juminda under full sails in the twilight.

The official opening of the squadron sailing event took place on Friday at the Hara harbor flag square, together with harbor master Tarvi Velström. Before the commodore’s opening speech, former commodore Armin Karu presented the club’s silver badge to the new commodore, Valdo Kalm. As a symbol of friendship between the Hara and Tallinn clubs, the host harbor master Velström and our commodore Valdo Kalm exchanged club pennants, and together they hoisted the Tallinn Yacht Club flag onto the harbor mast yard. It is a tradition in our club to learn about the culture and history of the harbors we visit. Tarvi Velström gave club members a fascinating overview of the history of the local coastal people, the origins of Tallinn sprat production, and the technical infrastructure that served Soviet naval ships during that era. In the evening, we were hosted by the harbor restaurant with its finest menu, and the most enthusiastic dancers had the chance to enjoy DJ Tom Lilienthal’s music selection.

On Saturday morning, we sailed on calm waters toward Viinistu. Commodore Valdo Kalm presented the Viinistu harbor owner, Jaan Manitski, with the club’s pennant, the 100 Years book, and a commemorative medal. Before dinner, Jaan Manitski took us on a journey through Viinistu’s history and gave us a detailed introduction to the extensive collection of the art museum. From Viinistu, club members continued their journey to Kaberneeme, Finnish harbors, and other destinations.
