Club evening with Mart Kuusk, who rowed across the Atlantic

The following description of Mart Kuusk’s and Hannes Hanso’s Atlantic rowing book “Across the Atlantic Ocean in 57 Days”, written by Heidit Kaio, serves as a fitting introduction to our club evening:
“Life is more generous; it allows room for mistakes. The ocean does not,” says Mart. An ocean adventure is a psychological thriller of the human mind. How do you cope with yourself when just moments ago everything was fine and the wind was blowing in the right direction, but a few hours later everything has gone wrong? One morning you wake up in equatorial heat with the sea surface mirror-smooth, while at night, in a raging storm, waves as high as four-story buildings in Orissaare crash toward you.
For two months, introvert Mart and extrovert Hannes are alone together on four square meters. That would be a challenge even with the dearest person! They repeatedly fall out and have to make up again, because the unpredictable forces of nature raging around them and human helplessness resemble outer space. The only chance to be alone is a sleeping space as wide as one’s shoulders. Mart and Hannes are different biochemical constructions, yet the daily routine is always the same – time at the oars, handing over the watch, taking in kilocalories, expending the same amount of energy, and bodily functions at set times. At the same time, there is no routine, because the actors involved – the ocean, the weather, and the human mind – are constantly changing.”
